While Bucks County is known for its rolling hills, charming small towns, and rich history, it’s also home to a handful of storybook-worthy castles just waiting to be explored. Whether you're a history buff, architecture enthusiast, or just looking for a unique adventure, these magical estates promise timeless beauty, fascinating stories, and unforgettable photos. Below is our list of the best castles to visit in Bucks County.
Fonthill Castle
Topping the list is Fonthill Castle in Doylestown. Built in the early 1900s by archaeologist and tile maker Henry Chapman Mercer, this 44-room concrete mansion is anything but ordinary. With 18 fireplaces, 32 stairwells, and over 200 windows, no two rooms are alike. Intricately decorated with handcrafted tiles from Mercer’s Moravian Pottery & Tile Works, the castle is both an artistic marvel and a piece of history.
Guided tours are available and include access to Mercer’s extensive personal collections of ancient tools, books, and artifacts. The surrounding grounds of Fonthill Castle and the adjacent park make for a great picnic or photo stop.
Mercer Museum
About a mile from Fonthill is another Mercer creation, the Mercer Museum. Housed in a towering concrete castle, this six-story museum features more than 50,000 artifacts from early American daily life, all suspended in open-air displays. From old stagecoaches to medieval locks, it’s a glimpse into how people lived, worked, and traveled before the Industrial Revolution.
Bryn Athyn Historic District
For something a bit more regal, head to the Bryn Athyn Historic District, just over the county line. While not technically in Bucks County, it's well worth the 30-minute drive from New Hope. Here, you’ll find Cairnwood Estate, Cairncrest, and the breathtaking Bryn Athyn Cathedral, all set within lush, manicured gardens.
Cairnwood Estate, built in the Gilded Age, offers guided tours of its grand rooms, stained glass, and sweeping staircases. The surrounding Gothic architecture makes you feel like you've stepped into a European fairytale.
Glencairn Museum
Also in the Bryn Athyn Historic District is Glencairn Museum, a 90-room castle built in the 1930s with medieval-style architecture and religious art from around the world. The tower tour is a must, offering panoramic views of the countryside. Seasonal events and rotating exhibits make each visit unique.
