At the Michener Museum in New Hope PA, The Crossing exhibit gives you something rare on a getaway: a moment to slow down, stand side by side, and actually see something differently.
A short drive from town, the James A. Michener Art Museum doesn’t feel overwhelming or overly formal. You can wander without a plan, pause when something pulls you in, and let the experience unfold naturally instead of checking off a list.
What The Crossing Really Is
The Crossing, coming late June 2026 and spanning through most of January 2027, is not just one painting. It is a collection of works centered around George Washington's crossing of the Delaware, each one offering a different interpretation of that pivotal night in 1776. Its arrival commemorates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence,
Some pieces feel traditional and heroic. Others are more modern, layered, and reflective. Together, they tell a fuller story of what happened and how history is remembered, reimagined, and often questioned.
Why The Crossing Feels Different
There is something about this exhibit that naturally invites conversation, particularly in the weeks and months surrounding our nation’s 250th birthday on July 4th. You might stand in front of the same piece and notice completely different details. One of you might be drawn to the scale, the drama, the movement. The other might focus on the emotion, the uncertainty, the quiet tension in the scene.
That is what makes it feel less like a typical museum visit and more like a shared experience.
A Slower, More Intentional Kind of Day
The galleries at the Michener are open and calm, giving you space to take your time. Beyond the exhibit, the museum’s connection to Bucks County adds another layer. Many of the works are rooted in the surrounding landscape and history, which makes the entire experience feel grounded in the place you are exploring together.
And if the weather is nice, the sculpture garden and community labyrinth offer more beautiful and unique spaces to continue the conversation in awe. If you find yourself naturally drawn to outdoor art, you’ll want to make sure to walk the Public Arts Program trail.
Make The Crossing Part of Your PA Stay
A visit to The Crossing pairs naturally with time spent in New Hope. Start the day slowly, explore the exhibit, and then head back into town for a relaxed al fresco meal or a walk along the river.
When you return to The Inn at Bowman’s Hill, the shift in pace continues. A glass of wine on the terrace. The sound of the trees settling in for the evening. A chance to reflect on what you saw and what stayed with you.
