Wander Through Bowman's Hill Wildflower Preserve
The Inn at Bowman's Hill is proud to have as our neighbor one of the most spectacular nature preserves in the country — Bowman's Hill Wildflower Preserve. From gorgeous trails and cascading streams to stunning meadows overflowing with wildflowers, the preserve offers visitors not only diverse landscapes to admire, but also educational, interpretive and conservation programs to foster a new appreciation for nature. Put on your walking shoes and discover why many travelers have been captivated by this incredible destination.
Established in 1934 within Washington Crossing Historic Park, Bowman's Hill Wildflower Preserve is a beautiful, serene place that covers 134 acres and is home to an impressive array of wildflowers, plants and trees. In fact, more than 700 of Pennsylvania's 2,000 native plant species can be found throughout the preserve. Some of the most popular wildflowers that grow here in the Pidcock Creek Valley include hibiscus, butterfly weed, Virginia bluebells and cardinal flowers.
Before you begin your outdoor adventure, be sure to stop by the visitor center to pick up a trail map and learn more about the preserve's history and mission. The visitor center features exhibits on the region's fauna, flora and people, as well as a gift shop where you can purchase souvenirs and guidebooks. The center is also where you can sign up for guided tours and special events. We suggest taking the guided wildflower walk, led by one of the preserve's naturalists, to view the flowers and fruits in season and learn about the preserve's history, habitats and important plant-animal interactions while enjoying the beauty along the trails.
Speaking of trails, the preserve boasts about 4.5 miles of walking trails that wind through various ecological habitats, including meadows, woodlands and wetlands. Most of the trails are gently meandering, ideal for leisurely strolls, but there are few that traverse more rugged terrain. As you explore the grounds, visit the special habitat areas, including Penn's Woods, the Green Labyrinth and Founders' Pond, all of which are carefully preserved to protect their unique ecosystems.
Thanks to these diverse habitats, the preserve is home to a broad range of wildlife species. Keep an eye out for birds, butterflies, turtles and other animals as you explore the trails. The preserve also has an observation platform overlooking Pidcock Creek, where you can spot various waterfowl, including great blue herons, American wood ducks and belted kingfishers.
At its core, the preserve's mission centers on the conservation of native plants and their habitats. It accomplishes this mission by fostering appreciation and knowledge through a range of programming — everything from wellness programs like yoga and therapy walks to educational workshops and lectures.
